Some of the German fleet lying at anchor in Scapa Flow.Scapa Flow is known all over the world as the home of the British Fleet during the last two world wars, as it provides natural shelter for a safe anchorage. After the famous battle of Jutland, the entire German fleet was surrendered to the British and escorted back to be impounded at Scapa Flow. However, the Germans had no intention of relinquishing its fire power to perhaps be absorbed into the British Fleet and so scuttled every single ship. Later, some were salvaged for scrap metal, but to this day many still remain submerged in their final resting places - on the bottom of Scapa Flow. Consequently it is perhaps the UK's main diving attraction.

In addition, some of the best fishing in the UK is to be found in and around Scapa Flow. Indeed, common skate have been landed weighing around 200 pounds. Similarly, Halibut of the same size have been caught. Premium Shellfish also form a large part of the Orkney economy for Orkney fishermen, who brave the elements to make a living. Seaweed, too, is harvested for an assortment of products.
