Longhope Lifeboat
The people of Hoy have
a long and proud association with the Longhope lifeboat, having furnished the
crew since 1874. During those years, the lifeboat has been housed in three
locations. The first has since been converted in order to accommodate shellfish
processing. The current mooring can be found at Longhope pier. However, it is
the intermediate Lifeboat shed that has since been turned into a museum. This
photograph is particularly relevant, as it features Lorna Heddle at the door,
when it was still an operational lifeboat station. You see, Lorna is a local
lass and part of the crew, and has been since the age of eighteen, when this
picture was taken.
Over the years, the
Longhope lifeboat's crew has been awarded many medals marking numerous rescues -
often in treacherous seas. Little wonder, then, that the island folk have come
to have a special bond with "their" lifeboat. The next picture
represents fond memories for many, who used to enjoy the rush of adrenalin, as
the boat hurtled down the slip. After viewing this site, we would be honoured if
you would take a look at the Museum
website.
