Commonwealth War Graves
at Lyness
Lyness,
in Hoy, is home to the extremely well-kept Commonwealth War graves. Here one can witness
Germans, British and Chinese crew laid to rest in the same cemetary, which is
extremely moving. Until recently, one lady travelled from Canada every two years
to visit her husband's grave. Unfortunately, however, she hasn't been seen for a
few years. This also bears testament to the islander's diligence and observation
of their environment. Lyness is also home to the Scapa Flow Interpretation
Centre, which, really, is a war museum, and brings home the connection
between the two.
